The image gallery shows thumbnails of all the images in the folder. So it takes longer to open when there are a lot of images in the same folder, or when the image files take a long time to download because of large file sizes - or both. The best thing you can do is delete the large files and replace them (if necessary) with a much smaller file size version and organize your images to keep a moderate number of images in each folder.
